Gender-neutral God to be redefined by Church of England?

Archbishop of Canterbury the Most Rev Justin Welby, pictured last month, has said: 'God is not a father in exactly the same way as a human being is a father. God is not male or female. God is not definable.'

The gender of God has prompted debate within the Church, with many calling for male pronouns He and Him, as well as reference to Our Father, to be trashed in favour of either gender neutral or female alternatives.

Bishops are to start actively discussing on “gendered language” and what to call God during church services later this year.

Many Christians have  welcomed the change, saying that “a theological misreading of God as exclusively male is a driver of much continuing discrimination and sexism against women”.

It seems priests can stop using the male pronouns 'He' and 'Him' when referring to God in some prayers, or even that they can drop the famous phrase 'our Father' from the start of the Lord's Prayer.

Any permanent changes or rewriting of scriptures with gendered language would have to be agreed by a future meeting of Synod.

The concept of the Holy Trinity, Father, Son and the Holy Ghost has always been a bit confusing, trying to figure out who is who.

But now, with the rebranding of God/Jesus on TV commercials and reassigning the gender description of the “Father, Son, Holy Ghost”, this muddies the waters even more.

As Pagans, we are at peace knowing who and what we believe in.

Recreating what you believe simply because you want to be popular is never a good idea.
